The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBI) at FAU Erlangen–Nuremberg is proud to announce the successful habilitations of Dr.-Ing. habil. Michael Haug and Dr.-Ing. habil. Lucas Kreiss Roohian in the field of Medical Biotechnology. Their inaugural lectures were held during the Department CBI Day, moderated by the department speaker Prof. Martin Hartmann and honored by the presence of the Dean of the Technical Faculty, Prof. Marc Stamminger.
Opto‑Biomechatronics in Muscle and Tissue Engineering – Dr.-Ing. habil. Michael Haug
In his inaugural lecture, Dr.-Ing. habil. Michael Haug (Institute of Medical Biotechnology) presented his habilitation work on “Opto‑Biomechatronics in Muscle and Tissue Engineering – From Automated Biomechanics to Adaptive Tissue Regeneration”. His research links automated single‑fibre biomechanics with sensor‑guided tissue engineering processes, aiming to integrate mechanical testing and optical readouts into unified, adaptive workflows for muscle regeneration.
At the cellular scale, the MyoRobot platform enables high‑precision functional phenotyping of single muscle fibres, combining force transducers, actuators, and integrated imaging to capture structure–function relationships under controlled conditions. At the tissue scale, the Tissue Regenerator project translates the same opto‑biomechatronic logic to perfusion‑based decellularization and recellularization of whole muscles, using multi‑modal inline sensors to replace destructive endpoint tests and to establish standardized extracellular matrix scaffolds as a basis for future regenerative therapies.

Label‑free Biophotonics for Deep‑Tissue Diagnostics – Dr.-Ing. habil. Lucas Kreiss Roohian
We are delighted to announce that Dr.-Ing. habil. Lucas Kreiss Roohian has successfully completed his habilitation in Medical Biotechnology. At the Department CBI Day, the Dean of the Technical Faculty, Prof. Marc Stamminger, officially presented him with his habilitation certificate, after which Dr. Kreiss Roohian delivered his inaugural lecture on “Label‑free Biophotonics for Deep‑Tissue Diagnostics”. His habilitation thesis represents the culmination of several years of independent research at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and computer science.
Dr. Kreiss Roohian’s work focuses on computational imaging and interpretable deep learning models that make label‑free optical imaging clinically usable. Rather than relying on traditional “black‑box” AI, he develops data‑driven models that can explain why specific diagnostic decisions are made—for example, when identifying chronic inflammatory bowel diseases directly within living tissue. This interdisciplinary success has been supported by an excellent scientific environment spanning multiple institutions, including the Institute of Medical Biotechnology (MBT), the Erlangen Graduate School of Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT), the Collaborative Research Center TRR 241, and the Computational Optics Lab at Duke University (USA).
Having returned to Germany after his recent research stay in the USA, Dr. Kreiss Roohian will continue to advance these topics and forge new collaborations. His future projects span FAU Erlangen–Nuremberg, Duke University, and the Humboldt Centre for Nano‑ and Biophotonics in Cologne, where he is currently developing computational polarimetric imaging to visualize structural changes in beating cardiac muscle cells.
